The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is a vehicle developed by Mercedes-Benz in conjunction with McLaren Automotive. The SLR stands for sport, light and racing, which puts the car in the running with sports cars like the Ferrari and Aston Martin. The car is actually based off of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR format, but with the help of McLaren Automotive, it became much bigger than the 300 SLR.
There are many technical aspects of the SLR McLaren that set it above and beyond other sports cars. For starters, the aerodynamics of the car are special. When the car reaches speeds above 59 miles per hour, the spoiler will automatically rise to ten degrees. However, the driver can also adjust the spoiler when they want to with the touch of a button, up to thirty degrees maximum. In addition, upon placing force onto the brakes, the spoiler automatically rises in order to help with the stopping power. The brakes are one of the many aspects that are unique to the car. They are made of a carbon ceramic that help to stop the car in a much better way than the simple disc brakes. In addition, the brake technology works to keep the disc brakes dry during wet weather by constantly skimming the service to remove any moisture that may be on the brakes. However, this is a feature that many have given skeptical reviews. They believe that the brakes were designed with stopping at tremendous amounts of speed, which was the idea. However, these critics state that the brakes are a bit on the touchy side for just normal everyday driving.
Engine wise the car sports a V8 engine with super turbo chargers present in order to increase speed. Most of the cars that are comparable to the car usually have rear mounted engines, however, the SLR McLaren has the engine located in the front of the car. However, it is located a bit further back in the front of the vehicle than most other front engine cars. The cars are equipped with five speed transmissions that are automatic, however, it does allow for manual usage of the transmission.
The performance of the car is improved upon by the light weight of the car according to the experts at Mercedes Talk. This weight is light because of using a carbon fiber to make up the entire body of the car. The top speed of the car is around 111 miles per hour, however, many tests have found that this top speed is much higher. The car can reach zero to sixty in 3.3 seconds. Gas mileage wise, the car does considerably well taking into consideration the performance of the vehicle when compared to those other sports cars that offer the same performance.
The car will cost people around $450,000 to own. Which is fairly low considering that this car is considered the fastest automatic car that is on the auto market. The praise for the car has been widespread, as professionals brag about how luxurious the car is, despite being considered a sports car. They most often comment on the feel of driving the vehicle, stating that you will not feel like you are driving a sports car, unless you want to feel like driving a sports car. In 2006, this marked the production of the 1000thcar, the plan was to release 3500 vehicles over a course of 7 years, with around 500 being produced during a year.
